Bunk Bed Safety

Bunk Bed Safety - Buy Only Well Built Beds from Reputable Manufacturers

Bunk bed safety considerations are important to take into account when shopping for childrens bedrooms. Make sure bunks are made by a reputable manufacturer who has met the standards set by the ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) and who will guarantee their products.

To ensure that a loft bed or bunk bed is safe, guard rails, easy to climb ladders and heavy duty hardware are essential. Kids bunk beds get a lot of use (and abuse) by young girls and boys so invest in well-built furniture that will last over time.

Care and maintenance

Bunkbeds need to be installed properly and used correctly in order to provide a safer environment. Test screws and lag bolts occasionally to confirm they are tight and the frames are sturdy. Keep assembly instructions in case the bunkbed is moved to another location.

Check list

Supervise children to see that they are playing safely. No toddler or child under 6 years old should sleep on the top bunk. Always get up and down using a secured ladder and watch carefully if there is more than one person on the upper bunk.

Buy only proper size mattresses (futon or standard type) that rest on several cross-pieces and fit securely on the bed frame. There should be a minimum of 5 inches clearance between the mattress and the rail.
